Glen Gabbard, MD, The End of the Hour: Exit Lines Gabbard defined exit lines as the patient’s last words dropped at the end of the session in order to keep them out of the therapeutic process and render the therapist impotent and unable to respond. He provided clinical vignettes to illustrate the heightened transference-countertransference that occur in these sorts of enactments. Learning objectives: 1. Define what is meant by “exit lines” in clinical work, including their defensive functions. 2. Explain why exit lines are considered enactments.
