Bullying and Harassment

Sharon Gerber, LCSW

Bullying and sexual harassment have reached epidemic proportions in U.S. society, particularly with the widespread growth of social media and in the current sociopolitical climate. We have witnessed bullying and harassment in schools, on the streets, in the workplace, and even in psychoanalytic institutes. With regard to school bullying, classical research by Stuart Twemlow and his colleagues indicates that interventions are most effective when they target not just the perpetrator and victim, but the bystanders as well. Mark Smaller’s article discusses the dynamics of bullying and presents case examples from an individual psychoanalytic treatment, a school, and a psychoanalytic organization. Sexual harassment can occur anywhere, but is especially problematic in the workplace. Whereas rape vanquishes consent, Virginia Goldner asserted that harassment involves leisurely objectification wherein the erotic charge is a perversion of consent in which “consent” is coerced under duress.

CFPS Alumni Group invites you to join us from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm to discuss a selected paper.
