New Topics in Psychological Development

Christopher Bonovitz asserted that young adulthood is a developmental stage in its own right, distinct from adolescence. The primary developmental task of young adulthood is separation from the parents, which involves a symbolic parricide. Bonovitz illustrated his ideas with a case of “failure to launch,” in which the patient’s development was stalled by a narcissistic vulnerable parent unable to allow the self to be “killed off.” While classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theories focus on the parent-child relationship with regard to personality development and psychopathogenesis, sibling relationships are relatively unexamined and undertheorized by comparison. Marilyn Charles’ evocative paper examines sibling relationships, providing examples of how they may foster or impede psychological development.

CFPS Alumni Group invites you to join us from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm to discuss a selected paper.
